First Post and All Hallow's Read

First attempt at a blog. Been thinking of keeping one for a while now. My main problem is that I have no idea what this blog will be about. TV Shows about nothing have proven successful but I'm not sure about blogs. My interests are all over the map and likely I'll try and keep things semi organized as I use this as an outlet of sorts for my all reading/teaching/fitness/stuff.

But for today I will merge two of my interests. Reading and Teaching.

A few years ago Neil Gaiman (if you don't know who he is you really should edumacate yourself and read his books, good starting point Stardust) came out with a great new idea for Halloween. All Hallow's Eve. I've linked the post here where he describes it far better than I ever could...

All Hallow's Read

In a nutshell you give a scary book out INSTEAD of candy on Halloween...okay not instead of but in addition too the candy (I'm not big on sweets...sorry). As a teacher this has multiple implications:

1) It gives you a day to get students excited about reading.

2) You don't really need another reason.

There aren't enough days out there to celebrate reading and this offers a perfect opportunity for everyone to make Halloween just a little bit cooler. Yes books are cool.

So whether you are a parent or a teacher, decide to give someone you care about a age appropriate scary book this Halloween. Have a Halloween Book-A-Thon in class where students exchange scary books and read for a large portion of the day. If you are a parent, give your kids a book and after the candy has been Trick or Treated, roll up under the covers and read Something Wicked This Way Comes. Or give that loved one a collection of horror stories and read next to each other on the couch sipping some hot cocoa.

If you need some recommendations good ol' Mr. Gaiman has got you covered Here...

Book Recommendations

But wait there's more. Audible has teamed up with Mr. Gaiman and is donating a dollar to Donorschoose.org when you download Click-Clack the Rattlebag, read and written by Neil himself. If you like words like slammy then this short story has got you covered.

Click it, share it, tweet it, like it, whatever it takes to get the word out. Beware though it is a bit scary for little ones.

Well that's that for my first blog post. Below share what you thought Click-Clack the Rattlebag or please feel free to make any more recommendations for All Hallow's Read!
